Moonspell's latest album, 1755, is a haunting and powerful tribute to the devastating earthquake that struck Lisbon, Portugal in that year. The album is a departure from the band's usual gothic metal sound, instead incorporating elements of traditional Portuguese music and spoken word passages.

The album opens with the eerie instrumental track "Em Nome Do Medo," which sets the tone for the rest of the album. The following tracks, such as "1755" and "In Tremor Dei," are heavy and intense, with vocalist Fernando Ribeiro's growling vocals adding to the foreboding atmosphere.

However, the album also features moments of haunting beauty, such as the acoustic guitar interlude in "Desastre." The spoken word segments, such as the one in "Ruínas," add an extra layer of emotion to the album.

About Moonspell

Portuguese gothic metal band formed in 1989 under the name of . They changed their name in 1992. Moonspell started out as folk-tinged black metal in their very early era (demos and debut EP), but eventually moved on to a more atmospheric/gothic metal style. The band's 2017 album, 1755, is a concept inspired by a past event, precisely an earthquake that destroyed Lisbon that year: also, it's lyrics are written entirely in Portuguese, with the exception of a copy of the fourth track in Spanish language reserved for the deluxe edition. The opening cut is an useless orchestral re-visitation of the track in Alpha Noir with acoustic guitars and Blind Guardian-like choruses/strings, the title track's opening sounds identical to Tool, before settling into Drop C-tuned waltzing post-In Flames grooves, and "Tremor Day" and "Evento" follow the same blueprint in a regular tempo. "1 de Novembro" and "Ruinas" are mere E/A-minor rehashes from their early works. "Todos os Santos" is a generic pseudo-mystic chugger, and "Lanterna dos Afogados" is a final semi-decent funereal ballad that reeks of Forgotten Tomb. Neither violent nor catchy in any way, with Ribeiro's clean vocals nowhere to be found, ranks among their most uninspired efforts.Highlights: "Lanterna dos Afogados".
