Review by Anne Overzier

Johann Sebastian Bach's Cantatas BWV 13 14 16, as performed by Gustav Leonhardt, is a stunningly beautiful album that showcases the composer's talent for creating intricate and emotive choral works. Leonhardt's interpretation of these cantatas is masterful, bringing out the subtleties of Bach's complex harmonies and rhythms with a deft touch.

The album begins with Cantata BWV 13, a work that features a rich interplay between the choir and the soloists. The opening chorus is majestic and powerful, setting the tone for the rest of the cantata. Leonhardt's conducting is precise and nuanced, allowing the choir and soloists to shine without overpowering each other.

Cantata BWV 14 is a more intimate work, with a focus on the individual voices of the choir and soloists. The arias are particularly beautiful, with Leonhardt's accompaniment providing a delicate backdrop for the singers' expressive performances.

The album concludes with Cantata BWV 16, a joyous work that celebrates the Easter season. The opening chorus is a tour-de-force of choral writing, with intricate counterpoint and soaring melodies that showcase Bach's genius. Leonhardt's conducting is once again impeccable, guiding the choir and soloists through the complex score with ease.

About Johann Sebastian Bach, Gustav Leonhardt

Johann Sebastian Bach was born on March 21, 1685 in Eisenach, Thuringia, Germany. A prolific German composer and organist, his sacred and secular works for choir, orchestra and solo instruments drew together the strands of the baroque genre and brought it to its ultimate maturity. Although he introduced no new forms, he enriched the prevailing German style with a robust contrapuntal technique, a control of harmonic and motivic organisation from the smallest to the largest scales, and the adaptation of rhythms and textures from abroad, particularly Italy and France. Many people consider him to be the greatest Baroque composer, and one of the greatest composers of all time. Revered for their intellectual depth, technical command and artistic beauty, J.S. Bach's works include the Brandenburg concertos, the keyboard suites and partitas, the Mass in B Minor, the St. Matthew Passion, The Musical Offering, The Art of Fugue and a large number of cantatas, of which about 220 survive. He died on July 28, 1750. Some of his sons also became composers - , , and .
