Review by Kuby

Ism, the latest album from Elliott Sharp, is a masterful work of experimental music that pushes the boundaries of genre and form. The album is a collection of 12 tracks that showcase Sharp’s unique blend of jazz, rock, and avant-garde influences.

The album opens with the track “IrRational,” which sets the tone for the rest of the album with its intricate guitar work and complex time signatures. From there, Sharp takes the listener on a journey through a diverse range of sounds and textures, from the hauntingly beautiful “Orogenesis” to the frenetic energy of “DYS.”

One of the standout tracks on the album is “The Hidden Variable,” which features Sharp’s signature guitar playing alongside the haunting vocals of Zeena Parkins. The result is a mesmerizing and otherworldly sound that is both beautiful and unsettling.

Throughout the album, Sharp’s musicianship is on full display, as he effortlessly shifts between different styles and moods. His guitar playing is particularly impressive, as he incorporates a wide range of techniques and effects to create a sound that is uniquely his own.

About Elliott Sharp

Elliott Sharp (March 1, 1951 in Cleveland, Ohio, USA) began playing the piano at six and performing concerts by age of eight, according to him. Sharp claims that his parents wanted him to be both a concert pianist and a scientist. He gave up piano, first in favor of the clarinet and then the guitar. His interest in science led him to build his own effects boxes for the instrument. He became intrigued with all types of experimental music, from contemporary classical to free jazz and sophisticated rock. Sharp studied anthropology at Cornell University, where he played in a band and took an electronics class with synthesizer inventor . At Bard College he studied with free jazz pioneer (future Lounge Lizards John and were classmates). He went to graduate school in Buffalo, where his academic advisor was . He moved permanently to New York City in 1979, where he played gigs at various underground performance spaces, including the notorious ~Mudd Club. In the '80s Sharp became a major figure on the downtown New York experimental music scene, collaborating with many of it's most prominent players, including , , , and . Over the years, Sharp has led his own bands more often than not. His music draws upon the wide range of his influences, from Coltrane to Zappa to Xenakis and beyond.
